Things You Can Do At Home

As we know, learning never stops!  Here are some fun activities you can do with your child at home.  The activities will help reinforce the skills being taught at school.

*Cook together!  It is fun to make dinner or bake treats with your child.  It is a great way to expose them to different vocabulary.  They can participate by getting you things, pouring, stirring...

*When you are playing outside, go on "hunts" for different things.  You might want to hunt for things that are red, things that begin with the C sound, things that are shaped like a circle, animals, letters...

*READ, READ, READ!!!!  They love to listen to stories and books are great for building vocabulary and sequencing events.
They love to show off their reading skills, too!  Let them read to you, their siblings, family pet...

*Have them help you make the grocery list.  They can sound out new words while working on writing beginning, middle, and ending sounds.  When you are at the store, have them read the list off and cross things out as you get them.

*Keep a journal.  Take photos (or have them draw pictures) of different things you do after school and on the weekends.  Then have them write about the activity.  Depending on their level, they can write one sentence or a paragraph describing the event.  Discuss who they did it with (characters), where/when they did it (setting), and what they did (plot).  It makes a great keepsake of the year!
