November

Here is a look at the skills we will be

focusing on in November:

**Literacy**

We will continue Readers and Writers Workshops. We will work on our reading unit called, “Word Detectives.” Some of the new skills that will be introduced in Readers Workshop are: readers look closely at words to get clues making sure they look across the whole word to solve it, readers do a s-l-o-w check to make sure the word is correct, they can rely on a reading partner to help solve hard words, when they see a word they know, they read it in a snap, readers use snap words as clues to think about what makes sense, readers solve mystery words by thinking about similar snap words, readers turn new words into snap words, readers scoop up words to make their reading sound smooth, readers break words into parts readers pay special attention to the beginning of words, readers look for endings to words, readers look closely at vowels and try them in different ways, readers use word parts they know to read new words, and readers watch out for unusual words such as contractions.  We will work on our writing unit called, “Writing How-To Books,” where the focus will be writing how-to books. When writing a how-to book, we will need to plan, sketch and write the directions on how to do something.  We will be using transition words to make directions easy to follow.  As good writers, we will continue to edit and revise our writing. In addition, we will work on Unit 4 in Fundations with learning the concept of “bonus” letter spelling rule- ff, ll, ss and sometimes z, glued sounds –all, story re-telling, and use of the exclamation mark. Also we will start Unit 5 with learning the concept of glued sounds: am, an, along with story re-telling.

**Math**

We will continue to do the calendar as part of our daily routine, which includes the date, the days of the week, the months of the year, patterns, and counting the days using hundreds, tens, and ones.  Also, we will practice using count back 1, 2, or 3 as a strategy to subtract, recalling addition facts to subtract numbers within 20, using addition as a strategy to subtract numbers within 20, using make a 10 as a strategy to subtract, subtracting by breaking apart to make a ten, and solving subtraction problems using the strategy “act it out.”
