March

Here is a look at the skills we will be focusing on in March:

**Literacy**

We will continue doing Readers and Writers Workshops.  We will begin our next reading unit called, “Readers Have Big Jobs to Do” by reviewing previously taught skills, along with focusing on: using all different previously taught strategies to figure out unknown words, self-monitoring our reading, thinking about a story to figure out unknown words, breaking up longer unknown words part by part to figure them out, using the strategy of analogy by solving new words by recalling one that looks familiar, practicing reading with fluency, rereading to understand our books, making mental images, keeping track of who’s talking (the dialogue) as we read, and making inferences.  For Writers Workshop, we will begin our “Poetry and Songs” writing unit, where the focus will be writing poems and songs.  In this unit, we will review previously taught skills, along with focusing on: different types of songs and poems, drawing on familiar songs to write their own, conveying thoughts and feelings through songs and poems, elaborating on topics, and revising and editing with careful attention to detail.  In addition, we will work on Unit 10 in Fundations with learning the concept of blending and reading words with 5 sounds (+ suffix ‘s’), segmenting and spelling words with 5 sounds (+ suffix ‘s’), adding suffix ‘ed’ and ‘ing’ to unchanging basewords with closed syllables, and vowel team sounds: oa, oe, ow, ou, oo, ue, ew, au, aw.  Also, we will begin Unit 11 with long vowel sounds for vowel-consonant-e.

**Math**

We will continue to do the calendar as part of our daily routine, which includes the date, the days of the week, the months of the year, patterns, and counting the days using hundreds, tens, and ones. Also, we will order objects by length, use the Transitivity Principle to measure indirectly, measure length using nonstandard units, make a nonstandard measuring tool to measure length, solve measurement problems using the strategy “act it out,” write times to the hour and half hour shown on analog clocks, tell times to the hour and half hour using analog and digital clocks and use the hour hand to draw and write times on analog and digital clocks.
