September 2016

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to Grandview Elementary School. I hope this correspondence finds you well and your summer has been memorable and enjoyable.

The closing of summer and the dawn of fall is a very special time. In fact, every year is different. However, one aspect seems to remain the same. The start of each new school year brings with it an air of excitement that is characterized by hope, expectancy and great anticipation.  It is a time for celebration, as we pause and rejoice momentarily in our successes.  It is also a time of contemplation, where we examine and embrace the areas that challenge us to become better. As such, we forge ahead, with the enthusiasm and assurance that we will have an even greater year. To this end, I am eager and excited regarding what this new school year will bring!

Throughout the year, we will continue to work diligently to sustain the academic progress our students have made. In fact, we will challenge them further with a rigorous curriculum and an academic calendar which will include Project-Based Learning Exhibitions, Digital Literacy, Invention Convention, M-A-Thon Competitions and Spelling Bees. You will receive details regarding student achievement and the PARCC Assessment at our Back to School Night on September 13th. At that time, I will also give details concerning our curriculum for each grade and expound upon our technology additions as we promote the digital literacy curriculum and 21st Century Competencies.

In order to maintain our successes, virtually all of our staff will be returning, which includes Support Specialists assigned to each grade level, where they will assist students in Literacy and Mathematics. Also, we will continue to offer a counseling department that is proactive with Behaviorists on staff who are trained and certified to offer a variety of services.

Our school culture will continue to be inviting and conducive for academic excellence as well as social-emotional development.  We will be in our 7th year of the implementation of the Positive Behavior Support in Schools (PBSIS) initiative, which is a collaboration between the New Jersey Department of Education and the Elizabeth M. Boggs Center. As a result, our theme “Grandview Greatness” will continue to resonate throughout our learning community, instilling a sense of pride and purpose as we promote a school climate with a structured discipline system which includes positive reinforcement.

Throughout the year I will be communicating with you on a regular basis through various mediums: automated phone messages, e-mails, conferences, and phone calls.  I will continue to make my office available to you, keeping you updated regarding all important issues that affect you and your child.  Also, I ask that you regularly visit the District as well as the Grandview School websites. Here you will be able to find important information such as classroom/teacher websites, supply lists, and announcements.

School will begin for all students on Tuesday, September 6, with a full day schedule.  Official school hours are 9:00 to 3:15. Please note that this is the same as last year. Students may be dropped off and/or enter their classrooms at 8:40.

As I move towards closure, experience has taught us that situations will occur throughout the year that will require us to examine certain procedures and make adjustments where necessary.  However, our time together has also proven that we can overcome all challenges when we continue to maintain an open dialog and work together. As such, I want to again remind you that my door is always open and I welcome suggestions and feedback as we seek to promote “Grandview Greatness” in all areas.  I really appreciate all that you do.  Also, I thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation as we seek to find remedies and solutions that will make our great school more productive and efficient.

In closing, please say hello to your child for me.  I know they have many wonderful summer experiences to tell me about! I can’t wait to see them!  Furthermore, I look forward to the many great and wonderful experiences that will occur this year at Grandview.  Please feel free to contact me if I can assist you in any way. My door is always open.  Until I see you, please be safe and be well.

Sincerely,

William F. Baskerville, Jr.
