May Updates

May 2018 – Monthly Update – Room 4 – Kindergarten

The month of May has quickly arrived in Room 4 and we have so many updates for you.  This month we will be reading the MTH book – Midnight on the Moon & later this month we will begin Dolphins at Daybreak.  We will really enjoy listening to this next exciting adventure about Jack and Annie at a coral reef.  We will be studying and learning about many interesting sea creatures and the wonders of the ocean.  The children will enjoy looking at sand, shells and coral & we will be working on fact books about the Ocean along with the MTH story.  We plan to learn many things about oceans, fish, dolphins, octopus, sharks, coral and oysters. J

In Go Math this month, we will be finishing our unit on ‘Measurement’.  The children really enjoyed learning about the various measurement concepts, especially height and weight.  They loved measuring how tall they are with a very long tape measure and drawing in all their special features on a personal body tracing.  J  We also will be beginning our last unit on ‘Classifying & Sorting Data’ in the Go Math curriculum.  We have thoroughly enjoyed this series and learned so much in preparation for Go Math in first grade.

These are some of the other Math activities we have been working on: counting to 50 by 2’s and counting by 10’s by starting at any number;  writing addition sentences for story problems; solving subtraction problems using manipulatives; comparing 2D/3D

shapes and learning about their similarities and differences; measuring assorted items using standard rulers; May calendars; writing numbers correctly 1-31 or as high as we can go J; counting large groups of items by separating 10’s and 1’s first, then counting the 10’s and then the 1’s; writing 3 digit numbers correctly (place value) – hundreds, tens, ones.  We are even learning to count by 100’s!  J

In Literacy Centers the children have continued to work really hard in all of our 8 centers.  This month we are practicing to work like “first graders.”  These are our goals each day:  stay focused on your work; draw neatly and color in the lines; write all of the sounds in the words; leave spaces between each word and write complete sentences on lined paper with the correct punctuation at the end.  We cannot stress with you enough how important it is that you practice these same skills at home as your child as he/she does his/her homework.   Thank you for supporting us on this!  J

We truly hope you will be able to join us for our Kindergarten Musical on Friday, May 11th.  The children have been practicing very hard to learn all of the songs and the sentences they will say.  We are so thankful for Ms. Perry’s excellent work with our kindergartners!  J
