January Update

**Literacy**

In Reader’s Workshop we will finish our Nonfiction Unit and begin a new unit called: Accelerating Reader’s Growth in Longer Fiction Books. Throughout this unit the students will learn how to track the characters and problems across fictional stories. They will also note how the character reacts to the problems or situations that arise in their stories. Students will also practice envisioning their stories to create a clear picture of all parts of their books, especially the characters.

In Writers Workshop, we will finish writing our informational books and begin our opinion writing unit called: Writing about Reading. This unit will be broken up into three bends. In the first bend, students will develop opinions about what they are reading by retelling their stories, so their opinions make sense to readers. During the second bend, students will be learning to read and reread closely to come up with more ideas for opinions, more details and evidence to support their opinions, as well as fun conventions that authors and illustrators use to fancy up and make their writing more interesting. Finally, in the third bend, students will write to persuade others that their favorite books are worthy of awards! All this hard work will lead up to a class book fair, where friends and classmates can listen to students’ book award announcements as a final celebration.

**Math**

Each week we will continue to have our star student lead us through our calendar routine. This includes math skills we have practiced in First Grade and will continue to expand upon in Second Grade such as identifying the date, the days of the week, the months of the year, patterns, even and odd numbers, skip counting, place value, and more! We will wrap up Chapter 4, take our VIP on 2-digit addition, and then begin Chapter 5 in our Go Math workbooks titled: “2-digit Subtraction.” The students will practice breaking apart numbers to subtract, adding to find differences, solving multi-step problems and more. We will also continue to challenge ourselves by completing our Math-ercise activities and compare our scores by graphing them on our personal charts.
